Moon Phases with Oreos®

Are you looking for a fun “snack-tivity” to do in your science class? This activity will keep your students engaged while learning about the different phases of the moon. To complete this activity, provide each student with a few Oreos®, a paper plate, and a plastic knife. Students will create each phase of the moon by removing some of the frosting to show the different phases, such as waxing gibbous, waning crescent, and new moon.

This downloadable science resource includes three different versions for your students to practice creating the different phases of the moon.

🌙 Version 1: Includes spaces for students to create and place each Oreo® moon phase without the help of pictures or labels.

🌙 Version 2: Includes spaces for students to create and place each Oreo® moon phase with labels

🌙 Version 3: Includes spaces for students to create and place each Oreo® moon phase with labels and picture support

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

If there are students who need a bit of a challenge, have them use the first worksheet that does not provide any images or moon phase names.

For students who need additional support, have them use the third worksheet that provides images and names of each moon phase. Students can then make each Oreo® look similar to the provided picture.
