When teaching students the structure of opinion writing, giving them an acronym or something to help them remember the correct structure is often a good idea. The acronym ‘OREO’ is popular – might be something to do with the yummy biscuit with the same name?!?!

OREO stands for Opinion, Reason, Example, and Opinion. This systematic framework helps students present their idea and supporting evidence in a structured way. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of each component:

  • Opinion – This is where the writer presents their main argument or viewpoint.
  • Reason – After stating the opinion, the writer provides an explanation or rationale to support their viewpoint.
  • Example – Following the reason, the writer provides one or more criteria to illustrate further and reinforce the validity of their argument.
  • Opinion  – The final step in the OREO structure involves restating the argument with a stronger emphasis.
