A puzzle focusing on the identification of organic shapes.

Use this teaching resource when studying shape as one of the Elements of Visual Art. Students differentiate between the geometric and organic shapes in a picture of a toucan.

There are two different ways to approach the activity. Students who are capable, cut out the shape puzzle pieces and place them on top of the matching organic shapes in the picture. Alternatively, students may identify the organic shapes in the picture and then color only these shapes on the black and white version of the toucan.

If placing puzzle pieces on top of the picture, it is preferable to use the black and white puzzle pieces as this allows the students to focus on the shapes they are viewing rather than the colors.

This activity provides a great opportunity for students to practice their fine motor skills if cutting the shapes.
