PEMDAS vs. BOMDAS

What is PEMDAS? It is an acronym for the steps in the order of operations, which are as follows:

P – Parenthesis

E – Exponents

M – Multiplication

D – Division

A – Addition

S – Subtraction

Multiplication and division are done as the same step, from left to right in the equation, as are addition and subtraction.

You may have also seen the acronym BOMDAS from time-to-time. This is the same procedure, but reflects different terms that can be used for parenthesis and exponents.

B – Brackets

O – Orders (exponents, square roots, indices)

M – Multiplication

D – Division

A – Addition

S – Subtraction

As with PEMDAS, multiplication and division are done in the same step from left to right in the equation, as are addition and subtraction.
