Sound Detective: A Phoneme Game for Young Learners

Use this fun digital phoneme game in your classroom to engage students in working out the common phoneme in a set of three images and then determining which grapheme is correct for each image. For example on one slide there is an image of: a duck, cat and kite. Students need to determine that the common phoneme they can hear is /c/ and that the ‘ck’ is the grapheme in duck, ‘c’ is the grapheme in cat and ‘k’ is the grapheme in kite.

Students can work through this digital game at their own pace in an individual way, in partners, or it can be used as a whole class game.

Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondence Activities

This activity has been designed to reinforce students’ understanding of the relationship between phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (letters or letter groups). This digital phonics game can be paired with additional hands-on and digital activities to deepen students’ learning and enhance their phoneme-grapheme correspondence.

Here are some examples:

  • Sorting game – students sort pictures into groups based on the grapheme that represents the /c/ sound in each word.
  • Grapheme hunt – students can go on a grapheme hunt in their reading books and highlight words that contain pacific graphemes they practiced in this phonics game.
  • Dictation – call out words like (duck, cat, kite) and have students write them down, focusing on selecting the correct graphene for the phonemes they hear.
