Poetry Worksheets with Cloze Passages

Introducing poetry to students can sometimes feel like a daunting task for teachers. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

The Teach Starter team created this set of five cloze passage worksheets to make learning about different types of poems exciting and interactive. Each page features a selection of short poems. Students are required to fill in the missing words in the poems either by thinking of their own or by choosing from a provided word bank.

The types of poems included in the resource are:

  • Limerick
  • Haiku
  • Cinquain
  • Acrostic
  • Rhyming Couplets

These poetry worksheets offer a playful yet educational way to explore various poetic forms. By completing the poems, students will learn about rhythm, structure and word choice. This activity encourages students to think critically about language and experiment with vocabulary within the predetermined scope of the poems provided.

Using These Poetry Worksheets in Your Classroom

These poetry worksheets have been designed by our team to make learning about poetry fun for your students. Here are some suggestions as to how you might use this poetry resource in your classroom:

  1. Poetry Unit Starter – Use these worksheets as a gentle introduction to a poetry unit, giving students the chance to explore different poem types in a hands-on way.
  2. Group Activity – Students can work in pairs or small groups to brainstorm words and complete the passages together, promoting collaboration and discussion.
  3. Independent Work – Great for early finishers, these worksheets allow students to work independently at their own pace while practicing language skills.
  4. Creative Writing Inspiration – Inspire students to write their own poems by first completing these cloze passages, then replicating the style for their own creations.
