A Fun Preposition Game for Your Grammar Lessons

Understanding prepositions is an essential part of early grammar development, helping students describe spatial relationships.

This preposition game makes learning engaging by combining hands-on play with visual support. Featuring three unique game boards, this resource teaches 18 different prepositions using pictures of a ball placed around various objects.

To play, follow these simple steps:

  1. Students choose one of the three available game boards. They will also need one dice and a set of counters for each player.
  2. The first player rolls the dice. Depending on the number rolled, they look at the prepositions pictures in the corresponding column, choose one of the pictures in that column, then say the name of the preposition being depicted. If the preposition is correct, they cover that picture over with a counter and record the preposition in the matching position on the recording sheet. An answer key can be found within the resource to assist with the checking of responses.
  3. The game continues until all the pictures on the board are covered. Alternatively, the game could be ended once a student completes an entire column or row (similar to a game of Bingo).

The resource downloads as a full-color PDF or editable Google Slides file. Inside, you will find:

  • Instruction page
  • 3 x game boards
  • Answer key
  • Recording sheet

A Prepositions Game for Small Group Play

This prepositions game is perfect for use in a small-group literacy center, reinforcing prepositions in a fun and low-stress environment.

For use in small group sessions, provide each student (or pairs of students) with a game board and dice. Students take turns rolling the dice, identifying the correct preposition and covering the picture with a counter.

You might like to add some additional activities when playing in a small group, such as:

  • Use the Preposition in a Sentence – Students say or write a complete sentence using the preposition correctly.
  • Act It Out – Students physically demonstrate the preposition with classroom objects (e.g. placing a book under a chair).
  • Find It in the Classroom – Students look around the room and point out an example of the preposition in real life.

We recommend printing the game boards on cardstock for added durability. Keep the boards, instructions and a few recording sheets together in a large envelope or ziplock bag for safekeeping.
