Solving Math Word Problems Strategies

This collection of math word problem strategy mats have been designed by an experienced teacher to step students through different ways to solve math word problems. With ten different strategy mats the following math strategies are included:

• Draw it.
• Write a number sentence.
• Underline the important information in the word problem.
• Use a number line.
• Make a table.
• Break it into parts to solve the problem.
• Work backwards to solve.
• Use objects to solve.

Once you’ve picked a template that suits your students, print out a class set cardstock and slip each one inside of a dry erase sleeve. Students can use whiteboard markers on the mat, then wipe clean. Alternatively, you can project the resource on the whiteboard and use it solve problems with the class.

Why teach Problem Solving?

Problem Solving helps develop logical thinking and provides students with a context for learning mathematical knowledge. Problem solving also helps children take responsibility for their own learning.
