What is a Three-Act Math Task?

A Three-Act Math Task is a way of teaching math by telling a story or presenting a problem in three parts. First, students are hooked with an interesting question or scenario. Then, they explore the problem, gather information, and try to solve it. Finally, they see the solution and reflect on how they approached the problem.

Meet Rigorous Time Conversion Standards With 3-Act Math Tasks!

With those high-stakes assessments looming, it is our job to prepare our students for what they might come across. Rigorous math standards require students to apply their skills across multiple situations and be able to show their thinking and explain the mathematical reasoning behind their answers.

This set of three-act Math Tasks is designed to do just that. Modelled after multi-part questions often seen on standardized tests, these tasks take the student through a series of three problems requiring them to use information gained in previous steps and apply that information to new situations. Each task has two strictly mathematical questions and another that requires thinking and explanation of answers.

This printable set of three-act math tasks requires students to use their knowledge of time conversions and solving word problems with multiple operations.
