Using Double Quotation Marks – Rules Review

This printable anchor chart includes the following quotation mark rules and examples of sentences demonstrating each rule for using double quotation marks in text:

  • Use double quotation marks around direct speech.

The teacher cried, “Yes, that’s right!”

  • Do not use any quotation marks for indirect speech.

She said that she thought no one would get it right.

  • Use single quotation marks around quotes within direct speech.

“When I say ‘Let the games begin’, start running!” said Mr. Jay.

  • Use a comma before directly quoting someone else.

  • If the quote is not a full sentence, do not use a comma before the first quotation mark.
