Remember Those R-Blend Words with a Word Wall!
Blending consonants together is an important skill to learn when decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) words. This list of 50 words containing an initial r-blend (a consonant followed by the letter “r”) has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. The letter “r” is paired with the following initial consonants:
- fr (as in frog)
- dr (as in drop)
- cr (as in cry)
- br (as in brown)
- gr (as in grow)
- pr (as in print)
- tr (as in trap)
Multiple Applications for R-Blend Word Cards
This literacy resource can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners. Here are some of our suggestions:
Individual practice
Send the word cards home so your students can practice decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the words on the cards. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.
Formative assessment
Use the word cards as a progress monitoring tool to keep track of your student’s phonemic awareness and to identify the various r-blends that require further review.
Print Your Own R-Controlled Word Wall Cards
Print out these R Blend Word Wall Vocabulary cards and cut them along the line. Stick them up around your room to immerse your students in the blend of sounds.
