Fix-Up Strategies Anchor Chart – Helping Students Overcome Reading Roadblocks

When students encounter confusing text, they need strategies to fix their understanding and keep reading. This poster provides easy-to-follow prompts to help students self-correct and stay engaged with their reading.

With this poster, students will be reminded to:

✔ Reread the sentence for better understanding.
✔ Look for context clues to figure out tricky words.
✔ Break the word into smaller parts to decode its meaning.
✔ Ask a question or make a connection to clarify ideas.

Perfect for classroom displays, reading groups, and literacy centers, this resource encourages students to take control of their comprehension and develop lifelong reading skills.

Fix Up Strategies and Monitoring

Fix up strategies and monitoring go hand in hand when it comes to reading comprehension. Monitoring is the ongoing process of checking for understanding as a student reads, while fix-up strategies are the actions taken when comprehension breaks down.

When a student monitors their reading, they are constantly asking themselves – does this make sense? Do I understand what I just read? Being able to monitor like this is a great sign that children are developing into confident readers.
