Make Ice Cream in a Bag and discover how removing heat causes matter to change states.
Make Teaching Matter Sweeter With Teach Starter!
Get ready to transform your upper-grades classroom into an ice cream production facility, where learning about matter and changes in state comes to life! We’re excited about this hands-on science experiment, which will allow your students to engage directly with scientific concepts and make their own tasty vanilla ice cream treats!
Ice Cream in a Bag Recipe & Science Experiment for Upper Grades
Through this exciting experiment, students will learn how removing heat from the liquid mixture causes it to change from a liquid to a solid state, illustrating the concepts of freezing and temperature change. With a few simple materials, some time, and a whole lot of shaking, your students can observe a ‘sweet’ change in state as their ice cream goes from liquid to solid!
This activity requires students to follow a multi-step process to identify variables and controls, create a testing setup, and use the materials given to make and observe how removing heat causes a liquid ice cream mixture to solidify. We have included the following in your resource download:
- Ice Cream in a Bag Recipe
- Materials List
- Step-by-Step Instructions
- Student Planning and Observation Guide
- Critical Thinking and Analysis Questions (written response)
We recommend completing this activity outside, just in case your students shake their bags a little to hard and a leak happens! Have fun learning, eating, and churning up new science lessons with Teach Starter!
