Explore Visual Representations of Tenths

When it comes to understanding new mathematical concepts, visual representations can be very helpful! This simple worksheet has been designed by our expert teacher team to help your students deepen their understanding of tenths by representing them visually on a grid.

To complete the worksheet, the students choose a number between 1 and 10. Then, they color their chosen number of bars on the grid. Underneath the grid, they record the fraction they have created in four different ways.

Let’s say the student colored in three bars. They would record this fraction as:

  • Three out of ten
  • Three tenths
  • 3/10
  • 0.3

This tenths worksheet downloads as a printable PDF or an electronic Google Slides version.

Differentiate This Tenths Worksheet

Adaptable to various skill levels, the worksheet can be used for both introductory and advanced lessons. For beginners, it serves as a gentle introduction to tenths, while advanced students can explore more complex concepts like equivalent fractions and decimal conversions. Here are some suggestions for how you might like to differentiate this activity to cater to the diverse needs of your learners:

  • Model an Example – Before giving this worksheet to your less-confident learners, model an example of how to complete the activity. Students can watch and then mimic the process of coloring in tenths on the grid.
  • Add Additional Elements – Before giving this worksheet to your more-confident leaners, use the editable Google Slides version to add additional elements such as naming an equivalent fraction or percentage for the chosen fraction.
