The Ultimate Revising and Editing Checklist Pack

Help your students to confidently and comprehensively revise and edit their written work with this set of text-type specific editing checklists.

This resource includes checklists for five different text types: narrative, persuasive, report, biography and explanation, with each checklist thoughtfully designed to guide students through a comprehensive editing process.

Each revising and editing checklist includes:

  • Text-Specific Structure Checks Each checklist includes a section that highlights the essential structural elements unique to the text type, ensuring that students can verify their writing follows the correct format and logical order.
  • Language and Text Features Students are prompted to assess their use of language and specific text features required for each type of writing, from vivid descriptions in a narrative to clear argumentation in a persuasive piece.

Each criterion on these revising and editing checklists is accompanied by a checkbox that students can mark off to indicate that they have revised and edited their writing for that specific requirement.

How to Get the Most From This Edit and Revise Checklist Pack

Using editing checklists helps students to gradually build self-editing skills, making the writing process more interactive and enriching for young writers. Here’s an example of how a student might use the narrative checklist to improve the overall quality of their work:

  1. First Draft Review – After completing a first draft of their narrative, students use the checklist to ensure their story has essential structural elements, such as a clear orientation, complication, climax and resolution, and that the plot flows smoothly.
  2. Check for Language Features – The editing and revising checklist guides students to verify that they have included engaging descriptions and dialogue that bring their characters and scenes to life.
  3. Grammar and Spelling – Students review their work to correct any spelling or grammar mistakes highlighted in the language section of the checklist. They should also attempt to add any elements they may have missed.
  4. Peer Review  – To deepen the process, students can exchange their work with a peer, who uses the same editing checklist to provide feedback. This further reinforces an understanding of the structural and textual elements of the focus text type.
  5. Final Adjustments – Students make any final changes based on their editing checklist usage and peer feedback, ensuring their piece is ready for polishing and submission.
