Round numbers to different place values with a Google Interactive activity designed for fourth and fifth-grade students.

Practice Rounding Numbers

What does it mean to round a number? This mathematical concept involves understanding place value and changing a number to one that is easier to work with while still remaining close to the original value. When you round a number, there will be one or more zeros at the end of the number.

For example, 457, rounded to the nearest tens place, would be 460. When this same number is rounding to the nearest hundreds place, it will round to 500.

Rounded numbers help students with mental math and estimation skills. Teach Starter has created a fun interactive activity that your students can use to strengthen their rounding skills!

Students complete the activities by following the directions on each slide. Slides include tasks such as matching, placing answers on a number line, filling in a table, coloring in a maze, word problems, and more.

Through this activity, students will practice rounding whole numbers and decimals to a specific place value through a variety of problem-solving tasks.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your math lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided math groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students who need additional support, consider providing them with a rounding poster as a reminder of when to round up or round down. Students can also work on preselected activities rather than the entire set.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

As an extension, ask students to create a poster or video tutorial about how to round to different place values. Another extension idea- give students catalogs and magazines, have them cut out the prices of various items, and round to different place values.

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
