Roll to Create a Holiday Poem

Are you looking for a way to shake up your poetry writing lessons? Look no further than Teach Starter’s Roll-a-Poem dice game!

This game is a fun and engaging way to get your students’ imaginations flowing and inspire new ideas for holiday poems. To play, students roll a die to randomly select a type of poem, a mood and a holiday-related subject, giving them a creative challenge. Once the students roll, they used their rolled combination to write a fun and creative poem. By rolling for their poem’s structure, tone and topic, students are encouraged to think outside the box and embrace the spontaneity of poetry creation.

This roll-a-poem pack contains the following holiday topics:

  • Christmas
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Birthdays
  • St. Patrick’s Day

A blank template is also provided so that students can create moods and subjects for a topic of their choice.

Use This Holiday Poem Activity in Your Classroom

This versatile poetry game can be used in multiple ways in your classroom. Here are just a handful of ideas from our expert teacher team:

  1. Holiday Poetry Contest – Organize a poetry contest in which students roll to create a poem and then decorate their finished work with festive visuals. Encourage creativity both in their writing and their presentation. Display the completed poems on a holiday-themed bulletin board for all to see.
  2. Classroom Poetry Game – Turn this activity into a class game! Pair up students or create small groups, then have them roll the dice together to create a group poem. Afterwards, each group can present their poem to the class, highlighting how different combinations of poem types, moods and subjects lead to unique results.
  3. Seasonal Poetry Journal – Throughout the holiday season, students can use the worksheets to roll for a new poem every week, keeping a poetry journal filled with their seasonal writings. This approach promotes consistency in writing practice and allows students to reflect on how their poems evolve over time.
