How to Round With Decimals

Whether you’re a seasoned educator or returning to the 5th grade after a break, we’re here to guide you through teaching your students the crucial skills of rounding decimals. With our helpful tips and tricks, you can feel confident in engaging and inspiring your students.

  • Look at the digit to the right of the one you want to round – For example, in 3.78, the digit to the right of the one’s place is 7.
  • Decide how to round – If that digit is 5 or greater, you’ll round the number up. If it’s less than 5, you’ll round the number down.
  • Change the digits after the one you want to round to zeros – In our example, let’s say we want to round 3.78 to the nearest whole number. The digit after the decimal point is 7, which is more than 5. So, we change everything after the 7 to zeros. This makes 3.78 turn into 4.00.
  • Drop the zeros –  Finally, you can drop the zeros at the end. So, rounding 3.78 to the nearest whole number gives you 4.

It’s like saying, “Hey, let’s make this number a bit simpler but still pretty close to what it was!” Rounding decimals helps when you’re working with numbers with lots of decimal places and want to make them easier to work with.
