How to Use Your Rounding Poster and Rounding Worksheets
When your students have a good understanding of place value, they may be ready to work on rounding to the nearest ten or rounding to the nearest hundred. Teach Starter’s Rainbow Rounding poster will help students make the connection between the different rounding rules. Read on for how to use the Rounding Rainbow in your classroom!
Have you ever noticed the rainbow of numbers when it comes to rounding? On the left side, we have our trusty helpers, 1, 2, 3, and 4. These numbers give us a nudge to round down if the last digit of a number falls within their range. It’s like having a little team of supporters guiding us toward the correct answer.
On the right side, we have our enthusiastic cheerleaders, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. These numbers give us the motivation we need to round up if the last digit of a number falls within their range. It’s like having a big squad of supporters cheering us on to get the right answer.
Let’s take the number 73 as an example. The last digit is 3, which falls on the left side of the rainbow, telling us to round down. Therefore, 73 becomes 70. On the other hand, if we take the number 58 and look at the last digit, which is 8, we see it falls on the right side of the rainbow, telling us to round up. Therefore, 58 becomes 60.
With practice, your students can become rounding pros! To assess their understanding of rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds place, use the differentiated worksheets provided. With this skill under their belts, they’ll be ready to tackle even more challenging math concepts confidently and enthusiastically.
