Crack the Code: CVC Word Blending Challenge!

This set of task cards has been created with phoneme blending development in mind. As students work out the beginning sounds of each image – they then need to blend the three sounds together to create a word. This activity has been designed to strengthen your students phonemic awareness by assisting with isolating and blending individual sounds (phonemes) in words.

As your students identify the beginning, middle and ending sounds in each CVC word, they are becoming more adept at hearing and manipulating these sounds in a structured and fin way.

How to Use and Modify these Task Cards

Guidelines for using these task cards for students:

  • Choose a task card
  • Identify and write the letters of the beginning sound for each picture.
  • Blend the sounds together to read the ‘secret code’ and record your answer on the recording sheet.

How to differentiate this resource to suit the needs of your students:

  • While this resource has been designed for students to write the letters and record the CVC words on a recording sheet, for those students not ready for phoneme-grapheme correspondence, you can use counters to identify each sound and assist with the blending making it an auditory exercise.
  • You may also like to utilize sound boxes to scaffold this activity a little more for those students that may find it challenging.
  • To challenge students, you may like to get them to create their own secret code words and challenge their peers to crack the code.
