Unlock the Power of Words with Our Shades of Meaning Verb Worksheet Pack

This set of shades of meaning verb worksheets has been created by an experienced teacher to help students explore and develop a strong bank of verbs to use during their own writing. When students understand the shades of meaning in similar verbs, they will be able to bump up their writing and begin to use stronger verbs.

Why teach shades of meaning verbs?

Teaching your students about shades of meaning in verbs can help them in the following ways:

  • Enhances their vocabulary and increase their bank of words they can use during writing.
  • Improves their writing as they have a broader range of vocabulary.
  • Boost their comprehension when reading as they have a larger understanding of synonyms of words.

How to Use these Shades of Meaning Worksheets in the Classroom

These worksheets have been designed to either be used as one booklet of activities, or, alternatively you can print them off and use them throughout a period of time to further enhance your students’ understanding of shades of meaning in verbs.

Here are some simple ideas for how to use these verb worksheets in the classroom:

  • Use one of the worksheets for a daily vocabulary warm up if students are at that point of understanding.
  • Add these worksheets to your writing groups for those that are ready.
  • Complete a worksheet as a whole class and have a whole-class discussion about how using specific verbs can change the tone or impact of a sentence.
  • Once worksheets are complete – use them as writing prompts to write sentence using some of the words.
