Welcome Winter! – Syllable Types for Kids

Winter is here and you know what that means: snow, snowflakes, and the inevitable winter cold. But it also means that it’s time to get your kids excited about reading!

This Syllable Snowflakes literacy center is an interactive way to help your kids build the skills they need to decode multi-syllable words and identify open and closed syllable types.

This winter-themed literacy center helps your students learn how to identify the different types of syllables and the sounds that go with them. Each student will need a sorting mat, a set of picture cards, and a set of syllable snowflakes. Students will need to pick one picture card and say the word. The student will need to search through the snowflake cards for the right syllables to complete the word on their picture card. They will then determine whether each syllable in the word is an open syllable or closed syllable by sorting them into the correct category on the sorting mat.

Differentiation and Acceleration Options

Give accelerated students a grouping of picture cards only. They will draw a picture card, clap the syllables, and attempt to spell the word by breaking it into its individual syllables. Provide the answer key so they can check their work.

If your students have trouble identifying each word’s syllables, show them how to clap it out. This makes sounding out words fun (they love to make noise!). Plus, students engage multiple senses while working on their phonological awareness.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print the sorting mats and cards on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all game parts in a folder or large envelope for easy access.
