Let’s Be Social – Stories for the Classroom
Teaching school rules at the beginning of the year can be difficult for some students, and that’s why the Teach Starter Teacher Team decided to create this mini-book. This resource is a helpful tool for teaching rules and social expectations in school settings, especially for children with autism spectrum disorder or other learning challenges. It uses simple language and real-life photographs to explain appropriate behavior and responses to specific situations. The last page of the mini-book also poses a question with three picture choices for students to choose from as their answer.
This mini-book looks at the following rules:
- following directions
- listening to others
- raising your hand
- using a quiet voice
- keeping things to yourself
- walking in line
- and more.

Print out a copy, and cut each page along the dotted line. Stack the pages together, and secure them with staples or metal rings.
Use this social cues mini-book with a classroom peer or a teacher’s guidance. It can also be sent home with students for their parents or caregivers to review with them at home before coming to school.
