Explore Subject-Specific Soil Words

One of the most important aspects of any science unit of work is teaching students the subject-specific vocabulary related to the topic. Knowing and understanding subject-specific vocabulary ensures that students can discuss and communicate scientific concepts with clarity and accuracy.

This worksheet has been designed to introduce your students to 16 vocabulary words related to the study of soil and its properties. The download contains two versions of the worksheet – one contains a word bank, the other does not. These variations can be used for differentiation purposes.

The soil vocabulary words featured in the worksheet are: loam, properties, compaction, decomposing, particles, fertility, clay, water retention, sand, weathering, silt, nutrients, soil, organic matter, habitat, texture.

By completing this activity, students will be better equipped to use the subject-specific vocabulary related the the subject of soil in their verbal and written communications.

  • Flashcards – Have your students create colorful flashcards for the words contained in the word bank. These can be used by the students to reinforce the key vocabulary related to soil.
  • Use It in a Sentence – One of the best ways to show understanding of a word is to use it correctly in context. When they have finished the worksheet, have your students use each word in a sentence to demonstrate that they are able to use the word correctly in context. 
  • Draw It – Some students learn best through visual representations. Have your students choose a selection of words from the word bank to represent as a labeled diagram.
