Practice Spelling Homophones Correctly

Homophones are some of the trickiest words for our students to spell correctly. There’s no magic formula to knowing which way to spell these words based on their meaning… it’s simply a matter of revisiting these words as often as possible and giving students opportunities to use them regularly in context!

This set of three differentiated worksheets has been designed by our experienced teacher team so your students can practice spelling common homophones correctly. Students are required to look at the image, then spell the word correctly. All the images are homophones.

The homophones increase in difficulty with each worksheet. The homophones included on each worksheet are outlined below:

  • Worksheet 1 – sun, pear, bee, two, tail, eye, bear, mail, sail
  • Worksheet 2 – toe, meat, pour, tea, sum, road, hare, sea, plane
  • Worksheet 3 – witch, knight, knot, eight, write, flower, week, heel, stairs

Answers are also provided.

This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or an editable Google Slides version (for those of you who might like to make a few personalized adjustments)!

This spelling homophones worksheet makes a great addition to your suite of homophones resources.

How to Extend This Homophones Activity

These spelling homophones worksheets look deceptive simple, but they provide a great springboard for you to further extend your students’ understanding of these and other homophones. Here are some activities you might like to use in your classroom as an accompaniment to these worksheets.

  1. Write It on a Whiteboard – Why print off multiple copies of this worksheet when you can project it on your interactive whiteboard? Project your worksheet of choice, then provide the students with mini-whiteboards. Point to pictures at random, then have the students write the word on their boards. This provides a great opportunity for teachers to informally check how individual students are grasping the concept.
  2. List the Pair – Have students who have already finished their worksheet? Challenge them to list the other homophones for each image (e.g. for “sun”, the matching homophone would be “son”.) Bonus points for also writing a definition of these words!
  3. Homophones Story – One of the best ways for students to demonstrate their understanding of homophones is to use them correctly in sentences. Challenge your students to write a short story using as many homophones from the worksheet they worked on as possible. Students could then share their stories with the class.
