STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities present a wonderful opportunity to bring real-world problems and solutions into the classroom, enhancing curiosity and creativity among students of all ages. These hands-on projects are front-runners in the race to improve critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This year, the Teach Starter Team has been hard at work creating a variety of easy STEAM challenges to take on in your first and second-grade classrooms.

20 STEAM Activities for Little Learners

This download includes 20 STEAM Challenge Task Cards designed to spark scientific thinking in early learners. Each card provides simple instructions using materials easily found around the home, classroom, or even the recycling bin! These task cards introduce students to a variety of STEAM concepts, including engineering challenges and art experiences, encouraging kids to explore and experiment in a fun, hands-on way. With engaging tasks like bridge building, foil sculpting, and kite crafting, your students will love taking part in these STEAM challenge activities.

Each task requires the students to design and create a new product or solve a design problem. The tasks cover a range of time frames, making them versatile and easily used in various ways. Some examples of the STEM challenges included in this download are:

• Build a Chair—Students will design and build a chair that can support the weight of a teddy bear.
• Foil Sculpting – Students will use a picture of the Eiffel Tower and aluminium foil to sculpt a replica of the monument.
• Build a Wind-Powered Boat – Students will build a boat that can float on water and can move when blown using a straw.
