Story Elements Worksheets for Primary Students

When first introducing story elements to young learners, traditional tales (such as fairy tales and fables) make a great choice! They are usually quite short and simple, are easy to follow, and are often familiar to the students. This makes a great springboard to jump from when exploring literary features such as character, setting and plot structure.

This set of four worksheets is based on the traditional tale, The Fox and the Grapes. Each worksheet focuses on a specific narrative element, allowing your students to become more familiar with these features as they identify them in the text provided. The focus of each worksheet is as follows:

  • Worksheet 1 – Students circle the characters in the story, draw the characters and describe the characters.
  • Worksheet 2 – Students underline the words that show the setting, describe the setting and color the picture that matches the setting.
  • Worksheet 3 – Students write and draw the beginning, middle and end of the story.
  • Worksheet 4 – Students write about the problem and the solution.

Use the worksheets in isolation to focus on a particular story element, or use them as a pack to dive deeper by exploring all the story elements of the featured text.
