Explore Tenths and Hundredths as Decimals

Parts of a whole can be represented in so many ways: as a fraction, as a decimal, as a portion of a shape, as parts of a dollar, as a point on a number line… that’s a lot of different representations for our students to grapple with!

Thankfully, the Teach Starter team has come to your aid with this pack of four engaging worksheets, each strategically crafted to reinforce the different ways that tenths and hundredths can be represented.

This comprehensive pack of worksheets covers the following key skills:

  1. Representing Decimals to the Tenths Place – Students represent decimals involving tenths using Base 10 blocks, segmented circles and the practical context of money. This foundational exercise engrains a clear understanding of decimal values up to the tenths place.
  2. Representing Decimals to the Hundredths Place – Building on the skills acquired in Worksheet 1, students delve deeper into decimal representation. This time, they use Base 10 blocks, number lines and the context of money to depict decimals up to the hundredths place.
  3. Comparing Decimals with Tenths and Hundredths – Students take on the challenge of comparing decimals using visual representations in the form of a hundreds grid. By coloring and comparing the two grids, students make judgements about which decimal is larger or smaller.
  4. Ordering Decimals with Tenths and Hundredths – The final worksheet challenges students to apply their visual representation skills to order decimals in ascending order. This activity promotes a holistic understanding of decimal values and reinforces the importance of precision.

Choose the worksheet that aligns with your current content focus or use the pack as a revision activity once all strategies have been covered in class.

This worksheet pack downloads as a printable PDF or an editable Google Slides file.

Key Skills for Representing, Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Through engaging with this worksheet pack, your students will be able to practice key skills such as:

  • Representing decimals in a variety of visual formats
  • Bridging the gap between concrete and abstract examples
  • Comparing decimals based on place value knowledge
  • Critically thinking about decimal relationships
  • Placing decimals in order based on place value knowledge

You may wish to use these worksheets in one or more of the following ways:

  • Guided Practice – Begin with a whole-class demonstration where you guide students through one or two examples on each worksheet. Provide step-by-step explanations and encourage questions.
  • Flexible Grouping – Implement flexible grouping based on individual needs. Group students with similar levels of understanding to work on specific worksheets or sections together. Less-confident students may benefit from the use of manipulatives such as Base 10 blocks, pretend coins, blank number lines and hundreds grids.
  • Formative or Summative Assessment – Use one or all of the worksheets as a means of assessing how well students are grasping and implementing the key skills mentioned above.
