Why Use Reading Passages, When You Could Use Printable Books?

Reading comprehension is a critical skill that begins in the early years with the goal that students can read and understand more complex texts over time. Reading passages are almost always the tools teachers use to provide students with the practice they need to master comprehension. However, those passages don’t hold a candle to real books! We’ve chatted with teachers, and members of our teacher team know how expensive those books are. We are building a line of printable emergent readers for first and second-grade students.

Printable Books are the Best!

This is a printable book for students to use during the Fall season (or any season) to learn about life on the farm.  It is perfect for first and second-grade emerging readers and will make an excellent springboard into a nonfiction writing lesson or project-based learning opportunities.

Students will love learning about farms and farm animals while they read and color the fun pictures in this book. The book covers everything from what is seen on a farm to the colors and sounds heard in a barnyard. Students can learn about farms, living and nonliving things and build informational comprehension skills while they enjoy reading and coloring the pictures inside.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided reading groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

Suppose you have a mixture of above and below-level learners and ELL/ESL students. We have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Have students work in pairs or small groups to read the text and complete the activities.

Provide read-aloud accommodations as needed.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Encourage students to read other nonfiction texts and identify facts and details in the text.

Have students write a nonfiction book and share it with the class.

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the pages onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
