Friction Reading Comprehension Worksheets for 3rd Grade

Are you looking for science resources that also address key learning outcomes for reading? Look no further than Teach Starter’s wide selection of subject-specific reading passages with accompanying comprehension questions. We understand how hard it is for teachers to find enough time in the day to cover all the content that each learning area dictates. That’s why resources that cover multiple curriculum areas at once are so incredibly valuable!

This friction worksheet does exactly that! It enables students to build their comprehension skills while simultaneously teaching them about the force of friction and the effect it has on our everyday lives. By engaging with this friction reading comprehension activity, students will be given a thorough introduction to friction by exploring the following topics:

  • All about friction
  • Types of friction
  • Friction is everywhere
  • Types of surfaces
  • Reducing friction

After reading the two-page friction reading comprehension, students are then required to answer 10 comprehension questions based on the content in the text. Questions include multiple-choice, true/false and free-response questions.

The resource download includes:

  • 2 x differentiated reading passages
  • 2 x differentiated question pages
  • Answers for both sets of questions

Two differentiated versions of this resource are included in the download. To make it easier for teachers to identify the two differentiated versions (but not so obvious to the students!), a star system has been used. The harder version of the worksheet, the more stars in the top right corner of the worksheet.

The harder version contains more complex vocabulary and slightly different comprehension questions. We encourage teachers to choose the version of the friction worksheet that best meets the needs of your class, or of specific students within your class.

This friction worksheet can be downloaded as a black-and-white PDF or an editable Google Slides file. Read on to explore how you can use this resource in multiple ways in your science lessons on friction!

Multiple Uses for This Friction Worksheet

This friction worksheet can be used in various ways in your 3rd grade science classroom. Here are some ideas you might like to consider:

  1. Concept Introduction – Are you wanting to introduce the concept of friction to your learners for the first time? Why not project one of the reading passages onto your interactive whiteboard and read through it together as a class. This enables your students to ask any clarifying questions and get a firm grasp on the concept from the outset.
  2. Collaborative Reading Task – Why not use these friction comprehension passages as a collaborative reading group activity? This is a great way to integrate your science and literacy curricula by covering multiple learning outcomes with one resource!
  3. Combined Assessment – If you’re looking to assess literacy and science outcomes simultaneously, this friction worksheet enables you to monitor both your students’ comprehension ability as well as their understanding of the science concept of friction.
