What Is Soil Used For?

Chances are, on most days, you don’t give much thought to soil. Yet this underrated natural resource is always there in the background, providing nourishment for plants, habitats for animals, and food, fibers and building materials for humans!

This interactive activity is the perfect resource for reviewing the uses of soil with your Kindergarten students. Each slide contains an image. Students are required to look at the image and decide whether soil is being used by:

  1. Animals
  2. Humans
  3. Plants

If students choose the incorrect answer, they are directed to a “Try Again” slide, which allows them to return to the previous question for another attempt. If the student chooses the correct answer, they are directed to a “Well Done” slide and can move on to the next question. There are 10 question slides altogether.

This resource offers a great opportunity to include curriculum-aligned gaming in your classroom while also exploring the uses of soil with your students!

Further Extend This Soil Activity

This resource provides a great springboard for your explorations into soil and its uses.

While it may be tempting to work through the questions one after the other, do look for opportunities to extend your students’ learning by discussing the images on each slide in greater detail. Discussion questions could include:

  • What is being shown in the image?
  • How is soil being used in the image?
  • What might happen if the soil in this image became unhealthy soil?
  • What could you do to protect the organism in this image?
