Two-Digit Addition with Partitioning

Partitioning is a fundamental strategy in mathematics that helps students break down complex numbers into more manageable ones. By splitting numbers into tens and ones, students can add more easily and with greater accuracy. This method not only simplifies the process but also deepens their understanding of place value.

This poster and set of two worksheets has been designed by our team to support you in teaching two-digit addition with partitioning to your students. Here’s what’s included:

  • Ice Cream-Themed Poster – This vibrant and visually appealing poster explains the concept of partitioning in a fun, relatable way… using ice cream scoops!
  • Worksheet 1: Partition for Addition – In this activity, students practice splitting two-digit numbers into tens and ones, then adding them together step by step.
  • Worksheet 2: Tens and Ones –  This worksheet challenges students to partition given numbers into their tens and ones components.

The poster downloads as a color PDF whereas the worksheets download in black and white.

Differentiation for Two-Digit Addition

If you’re needing to adapt this activity to meet the needs of all learners, check out these suggestions from our experienced teacher team:

  • Use Manipulatives – Help your less confident students partition two-digit numbers by providing manipulatives such as Base 10 blocks. These learning tools allow students to physically partition the numbers on the worksheet into tens and ones, making the written algorithms seem less daunting.
  • Partition Numbers in Multiple Ways – Challenge your students to partition the numbers on the worksheet in multiple ways. For example, the number 56 could be partitioned into 5 tens and 6 ones, 4 tens and 16 ones, 2 tens and 26 ones (and so on).
