To Verb or Not to Verb? Verb Sorting Activity

This sorting activity has been carefully crafted by a teacher to allow students the opportunity to sort through a collection of words and decide from their knowledge and awareness if the word is a verb or not a verb.

Students will sort through a collection of candies with words on them and decide if they belong in the Verb Candy Jar or the Non Verb Candy Jar.

How to Utilize this Sorting Activity in the Classroom

While the primary focus of this activity is to sort the words into two main categories, there are a number of different ways you could utilize this resource in the classroom to suit the needs of your class. Here are some suggestions by one of our resident teachers:

  • Verb Charades – using only the verb cards, get students to select a card and act out the verb without speaking.
  • Sentence Writing  – give students a mix of verb and non verb cards and get them to write a sentence using at least one verb.
  • Verb / Non-Verb Swapping – Give each student a mix of verbs and non-verbs. Their task is to swap their non-verb cards with classmates to end up with a complete set of verb cards.
  • Verb Hunt – hid the verbs and non-verbs around the classroom. Students then need to find them and sort them into the categories.
