Using either wall space or a sliver of your whiteboard space, cut out and hang the labels for the word and 7 engaging vocabulary building activities – and that’s it! All that’s left is choosing your words.

How to Choose Academic Vocabulary for Your Display

Choosing academic vocabulary for a word of the day or week routine for your classroom can be both fun and impactful! Here are some tips from our teacher team at Teach Starter to help guide you:

• Relevance to Curriculum: Choose words that align with the subjects you’re teaching. For example, if you’re covering a science unit, pick words related to that topic.
• Student Interest: Consider words that will engage your students’ interests or connect to their lives. Words related to their favorite books, games or activities can spark enthusiasm.
• Difficulty Level: Select words that are appropriate for your students’ reading levels. Aim for a mix of familiar words that they can deepen their understanding of and new words that challenge them.
• Contextual Usage: Pick words that can be used in various contexts. This helps students see how language works in different situations and encourages them to use the words in their own speaking and writing.
• Frequency of Use: Focus on words that students are likely to encounter often, both in and out of school. This reinforces their relevance and helps students retain them better.

By thoughtfully selecting vocabulary words, you’ll not only enhance your students’ language skills but also make learning exciting and relatable!

Use the dropdown menu located on the Download button and select from the printable PDF and editable Google Slides version of this resource. Then, choose which way you would like to display. If you are using wall space, you will want to use the first pages of the download. Laminate first before using a dry erase marker to write underneath. However, if you are using whiteboard space, you will want to use the whiteboard labels located towards the end of the download. This will allow you to write on the whiteboard located underneath each label.
