What Is Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to manage and overcome disappointments and setbacks. Instead of falling down and staying down, resilient people bounce back, learn from their mistakes and keep trying. Learning to be resilient is important for our students because life is full of ups and downs. We all make mistakes and face disappointments from time to time. The sooner we can teach our students how to bounce back from these mistakes and disappointments, the better!

Our expert teachers have created this 15-slide teaching presentation to help you introduce the concept of resilience to your learners. The presentation explains what resilience is and outlines some resilience strategies.

The key topics featured in this resilience slideshow are:

  • What is resilience?
  • What is bouncing back?
  • The bounce-back test
  • Why is resilience important?
  • The power of positive choices
  • Resilient behaviors
  • Sophia’s bounce-back story
  • A resilient celebrity
  • Embracing mistakes

The presentation also includes several student activities to help your students reflect on the content that has been presented.

By engaging with this resource, students will learn about the concept of resilience and the ways in which they can choose to apply resilient behaviors in their everyday lives.

Foster a Classroom That Promotes Resilience

Building resilience is an ongoing process for our students, and teachers play a crucial role in fostering this quality. Here are ten practical strategies that teachers can implement to help students build resilience on a day-to-day basis:

  1. Create a positive and supportive classroom culture.
  2. Set realistic goals and expectations.
  3. Promote and model a growth mindset.
  4. Encourage self-reflection throughout the learning process.
  5. Provide supportive, specific and constructive feedback.
  6. Acknowledge mistakes as a normal part of the learning process.
  7. Celebrate and acknowledge acts of perseverance.
  8. Model resilient behavior.
  9. Teach stress reduction and self-care strategies.
  10. Foster positive student-teacher relationships.
