Choose the Correct Homophone
Sun or sun? Pair or pear? Tail or tale? These are the choices our students are faced with every time they need to use a homophone in their writing!
The only way to learn which homophone is the correct one to use is through repeated immersion in these words. Just like learning the multiplication tables, homophones are words that need to be firmly etched into our students’ long-term memories. It takes plenty of practice to get these troublesome words figured out!
This set of three differentiated worksheets has been designed by our experienced teacher team so your students can practice identifying the correct spelling of some common homophones. Students are required to look at the image, then circle the correctly spelled homophone from a choice of two words.
The homophones increase in difficulty with each worksheet. The homophones included on each worksheet are outlined below:
- Worksheet 1 – sun/son, pair/pear, pour/poor, male/mail, blew/blue, tale/tail, hair/hare, I/eye.
- Worksheet 2 – bear/bare, plane/plain, flour/flower, sale/sail, sum/some, one/won, which/witch, meet/meat.
- Worksheet 3 – weight/wait, night/knight, flea/flee, weak/week, here/hear, right/write, rowed/road, heal/heel.
Answers are also provided.

Multiple Uses for These Homophones Worksheets
These homophones worksheets make a great independent review activity for your students. However, they can be used for other purposes too! Here are some easy whole-class games you could play with your students using this resource:
- This or That? – Assign one side of your classroom as “The first word” and the other side of your classroom as “The second word”. Project one of the worksheets onto your interactive whiteboard. As you look at each picture, students must move to the side of the room they believe is the homophone that correctly matches the picture (either the first word or the second word). This is a great way of getting your students moving as they learn!
- One or Two? – A slight variation on the previous game. Instead of moving to a side of the room, students put up one or two fingers to indicate which homophone they think is the correct match of the picture. This game also helps teachers to informally check how well students are grasping the concept.
- Tip Time! – As a class, discuss some tips that could be used to help students remember the correct spelling of the homophones on the worksheets. Sentences such as, “I need to air my smelly pair of shoes” are deceptively simple but will be sure to stick in the students’ memories for many years to come!
