🚀 Blast Off with the First Black Female Astronaut!

Learn about a doctor, scientist, and NASA astronaut, all in one out-of-this-world pioneer.

In this activity, students will identify 2-D shapes and color them according to the key. When they’ve finished coloring each icon, students will cut each out and glue them to cardstock or construction paper to create a rocket that sends Dr. Jemison on her newest space mission.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity as an in-class or homework assignment for:

  • Geometry Unit
  • Black History Month
  • Women’s History Month
  • American History
  • Earth & Space sciences

Additionally, students who need more support with these concepts would benefit from completing this worksheet in a 1:1 setting or guided math group.

Place this activity in your math center and direct fast finishers to complete it once your lesson is complete.

✂️ Hand Them the (Safety) Scissors 🖍️

You don’t have to cut these elements yourself. This template makes for a bonus cutting skills activity, depending on your students’ ages and abilities.

With adult supervision, cutting skills help students work multiple muscle groups and their brains, plus:

  • Strengthen finger and hand muscles
  • Build dexterity and fine motor skills
  • Improve hand-eye coordination
  • Develop focus and attention

And all of these skills are necessary to use a pencil, a toothbrush, a fork; button a shirt, zip-up pants, tie shoes; write, type, and swipe.

Scissor skills are brain and muscle skills!

Before You Download

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between full-color or black-and-white PDF versions of this resource.

A version with alternate illustrations is available for students who may find the original illustrations below their age level.

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity.

Because this activity includes an answer sheet, we recommend first printing one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

Don’t stop there! Your lesson plan wouldn’t be complete without these activities and teaching resources too:
