Exploring the Final Stable Syllable Type (Consonant + le)

Are your kiddos ready for you to teach final stable syllables (consonant + le)? Maybe you teach struggling learners, or you just don’t know where to start…We’ve got the perfect reference tool and learning aid for you and your early readers — a handy word study list available in printable PDF or digital Google Slides format.

What is a Final Stable Syllable?

A consonant +le syllable comes at the end of a word. These syllables contain a consonant, the letter l, and the silent letter e. These syllables always occur at the end of a word.

This list of 50 words containing the consonant + le syllable type has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. It includes words containing the following consonant + le examples:

  • -ble (as in bubble)
  • -cle (as in circle)
  • -dle (as in cradle)
  • -gle (as in eagle)
  • -tle (as in castle)
  • -kle (as in crackle)
  • -zle (as in puzzle)
  • -ple (as in simple)
  • -fle (as in raffle)

Multiple Applications for a List of Consonant + le Words

This list of words containing a consonant +le syllable can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners during your literacy sessions. Here are some of our suggestions:

Split the Final Stable Syllables

Provide the students with a dry-erase board and markers. Read out words from the word list, then have the students write the word on their whiteboard using a line to indicate the syllable breaks. Have the students flip their boards to show what they have written. Use this as an opportunity to assess which students require further support with the concept.

Individual practice

Send the lists home so your students can revise decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the words on the list. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.

Final Stable Syllable Words Assessment

Use the word list as a progress monitoring tool to keep track of your student’s phonemic awareness and to identify the consonant + le words that require further review.
