Long vowel sounds in the English language can be represented by various combinations of letters. This list of 50 “long e” words has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. The words with a long e in the list include the following spelling patterns:

  • e (as in be)
  • ee (as in tree)
  • e_e (as in these)
  • ey (as in key)
  • y (as in baby)
  • ie (as in chief)
  • ea (as in sea)

Multiple Applications for This Words With Long E List 

This literacy resource can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners. Here are some of our suggestions:

Whole-class instruction

Project the word list on your interactive whiteboard. As a class, practice segmenting and blending the phonemes in each word on the list. You might also like to create word families for each grapheme in the list.

Individual practice

Send the lists home so your students can revise decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the words on the list. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.

Formative assessment

Use the word list as a progress monitoring tool to keep track of your student’s phonemic awareness and to identify the “long e” graphemes that require further review.
