Learn to Read Words with the Long I Vowel Sound 

Long vowel sounds in the English language can be represented by various graphemes (combinations of one or more letters). This list of 50 “long i” words has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. The spellings of the long I sound in the list include the following:

This literacy resource can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners. Here are some of our suggestions:

Whole-class instruction: Project the word list on your interactive whiteboard. As a class, practice segmenting and blending the phonemes in each word on the list. You might also like to create word family anchor charts for words with the long I sound.

Individual practice: Send the lists home so your students can practice decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the words on the list. This will allow parents and students to practice critical phonics skills quickly and easily.
