Who Is King Charles III?
The whole world — including people here in Australia — watched as King Charles was coronated in May 2023. But just who is he, and why is he a significant person to Australia?
King Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor is the king of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, including Australia. He ascended to the throne in late 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who served as queen for more than 70 years.
The king is part of a long line of British monarchs, including King George III, who reigned as King of England at the time of the First Fleet's arrival in Australia.
What Is a Monarchy? A Kid-Friendly Definition
When teaching your students about King Charles, it would be helpful to have a kid-friendly definition of monarchy at hand. Here's one from our teacher team!
Monarchy is a type of government where a king or queen is in charge. They usually get their position because they were born into a royal family, like King Charles.
Australia is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy. This means that our government is made up of elected representatives. There's a queen or king (but they don't make decisions about how the country operates). The citizens of the country follow a set of rules called the Constitution.
What Is a Coronation? A Kid-Friendly Definition
Looking for a way to explain the meaning of a coronation to your students? Let's get started with a kid-friendly definition.
A coronation is a special ceremony where someone becomes a king or queen. It's like a really big party where the new ruler gets a special crown and lots of people come to watch and celebrate!
Please note: Learning about King Charles III and other events connected to the British Royal Family can be triggering to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people groups, due to the ongoing trauma faced since colonisation.
