Teach your students to locate and categorise adverbial phrases in descriptive sentences using this engaging interactive activity.
Review the Adverb Group with a Digital Quiz
Adverb groups are the key to making writing more informative and descriptive. They provide extra information about the circumstances surrounding an activity, such as where, how and when.
Teach Starter has created this fun interactive activity to help your students become more familiar with the adverb group and how it functions in sentences to provide circumstantial information. The resource contains 2o questions, each with four possible answers. For example:
What information does the underlined adverbial phrase provide?
I love playing soccer in the park at the end of the street.
- when
- how
- where
- how often/how long
The correct answer, of course, is where!
If students choose the incorrect answer, they are directed to a slide that encourages them to go back and try again. If they choose the correct answer, they progress to the next question.
This resource downloads as a Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides file. Simply project the resource onto your screen and work through the slides as a class for a paperless lesson on adverb groups.
Extend Learning of Adverb Groups
At Teach Starter, we understand that no two classes are alike! If you need to tweak this resource to better suit your teaching style (or the learning style of your class!) then check out these ideas from our experienced team:
- Four-Corner Movement Game – Label each corner of your classroom: when, where, how, how often/how long. As each slide appears, students move to the corner that matches their answer. Perfect for those energetic groups who need to get moving to stay focused.
- Mini Whiteboard Showdown – Give each student a small whiteboard. They write their answer and hold it up. This provides an instant formative assessment for you, and instant feedback for them. It’s a great for spotting misconceptions quickly!
- Think–Pair–Share Discussions – Before revealing the answer, have students justify their thinking to a partner. You’ll hear statements like, “I think it’s how often because it tells us it happens every morning.” Music to a teacher’s ears!
