Explore emotional awareness and healthy calming strategies with this comic-style comprehension passage and accompanying questions.
Learn to Control Angry Outbursts
This resource is a comprehension worksheet for the magazine article ‘Angry Outbursts’ from the Year 3 magazine, ‘What’s Buzzing?’ (Issue 3).
Chelsea is having a tough day. Her team has just lost their soccer game, and Chelsea feels like her teammates could have kicked the ball to her more than they did. She is feeling very angry!
But Chelsea uses emotional awareness and coping skills to regulate her anger. She listens to some music, then uses some mindful breathing techniques to help let her anger go.
Emotional awareness like Chelsea’s does not always come naturally to our students. It must be explicitly taught!
Reading Comprehension and Social-Emotional Learning in One Resource!
Students are required to read the 2-page comic, then answer the questions provided. By coupling a reading passage with the explicit teaching of healthy calming strategies, students can practise their reading skills whilst learning a thing or two about coping with and managing anger.
Some of the questions students will answer include:
- What triggers you to feel angry?
- What other emotions might be causing Chelsea to get angry?
- List some of the strategies used in the comic to manage anger.
- What other strategies have you used to calm yourself down when you are angry?
Multiple Uses for This Sequencing Worksheet
This versatile resource can be used in various ways in your classroom. Why not try some of the following activities:
- Whole-class activity (via smartboard)
- Reading group task
- Individual practice
- Homework task
Differentiate this task for learners of varied abilities by encouraging more-confident readers to complete the activity independently. Less-confident readers may benefit from completing the activity in a small-group setting with adult support.
