Antonym Worksheets for the Early Years

What are antonyms? Why do we need them?

Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. They are essential in reading and writing because they help to expand vocabulary, improve communication, and make writing more varied and exciting.

The set of worksheets has been designed for early years students so they may practise identifying and using antonyms in context. It includes the following activities:

  • Picture It Antonyms: Students are given a visual prompt, then must choose the antonym from a word bank.
  • Antonym Swap:  Students use a word bank to replace a word in a sentence with its antonym using a word bank.
  • Antonym Match: Students will match antonym pairs using a word bank.
  • Antonym Exit Ticket:  Students will identify an antonym for three words and write them on the lines. We’ve included six exit tickets that are perfect for informal assessments.

Each worksheet includes easy-to-understand instructions and multiple opportunities for students to practise using antonyms.
