Use this biodiversity project to teach your students about the importance of species survival to life on Earth.
Biodiversity in Local Ecosystems
Biodiversity is essential to life on Earth. Without a range of healthy plants and animals, humans would not have food, clean water, fresh air or other natural resources. This project encourages observation, research and analysis skills, promoting a deeper appreciation for local ecosystems and the delicate balance that maintains them.
The Task
Investigate a habitat to discover the different plants and animals living there. Formulate a hypothesis about what types of organisms you expect to find, then conduct a survey to gather data. Afterwards, analyse your findings and compare them with your initial predictions about the habitat.
Guiding Questions
- What is biodiversity and why is it important?
- How do different habitats support various plants and animals?
- How can we observe and record data to understand biodiversity?
