Cartesian Plane Pictures Make Plotting Fun!

Our Cartesian plane pictures are an engaging way to give your students practise plotting points in all four quadrants. Students quickly know if they are on the right track, as the correct answers will form a mystery picture.

This resource includes these worksheets:

  • Cartesian plane shark pictures
  • Cartesian plane robot pictures
  • Cartesian plane tree pictures
  • Answer keys

With three different images to choose from, this Cartesian plane pictures set works well as independent practise, in guided groups, or as a fast-finisher or homework activity.

How to Introduce the Cartesian Plane

Students will need an understanding of basic Cartesian plane concepts before being able to complete these pictures. Here is a list of terms and concepts you’ll want to ensure students know:

  • Cartesian Plane: A two-dimensional plane formed by the intersection of two perpendicular number lines.
  • Axes: The two number lines that intersect on the Cartesian plane at a point called the origin. The x-axis is horizontal, and the y-axis is vertical.
  • Origin: The point at which the x and y axes intersect. Its coordinates are (0,0).
  • Quadrants: The four sections of the coordinate plane created by the axes. They are numbered counter-clockwise, beginning at the top right.
  • Coordinates: Two numbers that together indicate a point’s location via the x and y axes on the Cartesian plane.
  • Plot: To place a coordinate on the Cartesian plane.
