Engaging Biography Examples for Primary Students

There’s a real art to writing a great biography. Biographers must research the varies aspects of their subject’s life and achievements, then decide which events are significant enough to feature, and which can be omitted. This can be a tricky skill for our students to learn!

As with any text type, providing engaging and age-appropriate examples is vital if students are to become confident biographers themselves. That’s where Teach Starter can help! This resource pack includes three biography examples written by our experienced team of teachers. The resource also features a two-page analysis worksheet to guide students through analysing the purpose, target audience, biographical content and language features of the sample text. Due to its generic nature, this worksheet could also be used with any sample biography.

The biography examples in this pack are:

  • Jamie Oliver (television chef)
  • Dr Mae Jemison (physician and astronaut)
  • Malala Yousafzai (human rights activist)

This resource downloads as a full-colour or black-and-white printable PDF. The worksheets can also be downloaded as an editable Google Slides file.

By engaging with this resource, students will learn how biographies are crafted – skills that can be applied to their own texts when it comes time to write biographies of their own.

An Example of a Biography Makes a Great Teaching Tool!

When teaching biography writing in primary school, students often need explicit modelling and repeated exposure to strong examples before everything starts to click. This resource includes multiple biography examples, meaning students can be exposed to multiple texts throughout your biography writing unit.

Here are some additional benefits to using this resource with your students:

  • Flexible use across different learning formats –  Each example of a biography can be used in whole‑class lessons, small‑group rotations or for independent literacy tasks. You might model the first read together, revisit the text during guided reading or set it as an independent analysis for students who are ready to work more autonomously.
  • Ideal for annotation and analysis – These biographies work perfectly for modelled annotation and analysis. Teachers can highlight text structure, label language features and think aloud while analysing purpose and audience. Seeing a complete, well‑written example often gives students the confidence boost they need before attempting their own writing.
  • Genetic, transferable worksheet – The accompanying analysis worksheet allows teachers to reuse the same analytical language across multiple lessons and texts. This consistency helps reduce cognitive overload for students, as they’re focusing on learning the concepts rather than decoding new instructions each time. It also supports stronger discussions because students begin using shared terminology when talking about texts.
