What Are the Four Types of Transformations?

Did you know there are actually four types of transformations? Here is a handy list of definitions for them:

  • Reflection: To flip a shape about a specific point. Imagine a mirror image of the shape.
  • Rotation: To turn a shape around a specific point. Imagine spinning something around your head.
  • Translation: To slide a shape in one direction. Imagine pushing a box across the floor.
  • Dilation: To scale a shape without changing the shape itself. Imagine blowing up or deflating a balloon.

Teaching these concepts builds foundational geometry skills and spatial reasoning and has many real-world applications.
