Assign this translations, reflections, and rotations worksheet to give your students practise with transformations and positioning on the Cartesian plane.
Translations, Reflections and Rotations, Oh, My!
This Translations, Reflections, and Rotations worksheet pack provides practise with a variety of year 6 and 7 skills. It is a four-worksheet set, and answer keys are also provided.
Skills covered include:
- Plotting coordinates on the Cartesian plane
- Creating shapes on the Cartesian plane
- Utilising all four quadrants
- Translating shapes
- Reflecting shapes
- Rotating shapes
This resource has a wide variety of uses, working well for independent practise, guided groups, or as a homework activity.
What Are the Four Types of Transformations?
Did you know there are actually four types of transformations? Here is a handy list of definitions for them:
- Reflection: To flip a shape about a specific point. Imagine a mirror image of the shape.
- Rotation: To turn a shape around a specific point. Imagine spinning something around your head.
- Translation: To slide a shape in one direction. Imagine pushing a box across the floor.
- Dilation: To scale a shape without changing the shape itself. Imagine blowing up or deflating a balloon.
Teaching these concepts builds foundational geometry skills and spatial reasoning and has many real-world applications.
