Reinforce your parts of speech lesson with our grammar game for up to 4 players.
Grammar Games Immerse Students in Language
Whether you’re just starting to introduce students to grammar or consolidating your lesson, playing games helps students speak and write with confidence.
In this activity, students roll the included parts of speech die and match their roll to the following noun, verb or adjective on the board. The player who gets to the end of the board first wins!
This game is suitable for 2–4 players and is available in two formats (with images and without) for students of varying reading levels.
Scaffolding + Extension Tips
Support struggling students by referring them to visual reminders like a parts of speech poster or anchor chart.
Challenge students to correctly use the word they land on in a sentence to claim it. This could be done orally or written down, depending on their ability.
We’ve created two versions of this game—with pictures and words, and only words. Use the words-only version with students who find the illustrations below their age level.
More Grammar Games for Developing Readers
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource for students to work on. It would be the perfect resource to add to your English group activities.
However, there are a multitude of other ways you could use this resource. Check out our suggestions for using this activity to reinforce your small group and full-class lessons too.
📃 Group Lesson
Using your smartboard or another projection device, present the entire game board. Students can come up to the board to roll a numbered die, move to a word on the board, and determine what part of speech the word is.
📖 Sentence Writing
Roll the die two times to select two words students must use to write a sentence. Do this a few times. Then, pair students up to share their sentences and create a collaborative story.
🎭 Charades
Divide students into two teams. Teams take turns sending up one student to roll the die and act out the word they land on. If their team correctly guesses the word and its part of speech, they get the point. (Need a timer? Try one of these!)
