Teaching Acronyms You Should Know!

Apart from having to keep up-to-date with ‘kid speak’ acronyms, which is a daily battle even for the most experienced teacher, there’s the multitude of teaching specific acronyms that get used in the staff room. Often, these acronyms are not discussed at the university level, so you have to hit the ground running when you take on your first practicum experience or even your first year of teaching.

The number of acronyms teachers use on a daily basis got us thinking. Apart from searching individual acronyms in google and crossing your fingers and toes that you’ll get the ‘right’ acronym description, there isn’t really one document you can go to that is specific to primary school teachers. So, we have created this very basic Periodic Table of Teaching Acronyms. This, by all means, does not cover every single acronym you may encounter as a teacher in Australia, but it definitely hits a lot of them!

THANK YOU! As a graduate, I often feel overwhelmed with teacher talk. I have just participated in a graduate PD and we talked about the jargon that we were expected to know and how seasoned teachers just know the lingo. Thank you to all who participated in creating this table. I would recommend that it is handed out to all graduate teachers. I know there are more and maybe some lingo is school-specific. If you are a seasoned teacher and have a graduate at your school, perhaps you could spare some time and decode the acronyms for them. I know they would be most grateful.
